Free Fiction Feature April 2021 | On the Card PLUS Making Waves

OK, so it’s been about a year since I launched the Free Fiction Feature, and I’ve decided to mix things up a bit. Instead of posting each story here, on my overall/multi-genre site, I’m breaking them out by genre onto my sub-sites going forward. I’ll continue to post a roundup here of the feature(s) for each month, as well as any other writing news.

What does this mean?

For fantasy:

A different short fantasy adventure will be posted each month on my fantasy-specific website, which will also be highlighted on this blog.

For mystery:

A different short mystery adventure will be posted for one month of each quarter on my mystery-specific website, which will also be highlighted on this blog. These posts will take place during the months of April, July, October, and January.

And yes, this means that during the months listed above, there will be two stories available to read for free–one fantasy and one mystery. This also means that those who enjoy fantasy will get a story in that genre each month, without a mystery story taking up a place in the rotation. For mystery readers, the scheduling is still roughly the same–if not a little more frequent–as it was when I was slotting my mystery stories on this site between my fantasy titles. (I have far fewer mystery shorts than fantasy at the moment, so the scheduling on that side is lighter.)

I hope this all makes sense… In the meantime, here are this month’s Free Fiction Features!

Legends of Lasniniar: Making Waves (Fantasy)

Legends of Lasniniar Making Waves coverDeep sapphire, flecked with silver. Iarion’s eyes mark him from any elf ever born.

A strange, physical anomaly? Or a sign of his unique condition? Even after thousands of years spent wandering the lands of Lasniniar, the answer continues to elude him.

…Now Iarion’s eyes sweep the harbor of the Sea Elves in the hopes that his ship might finally come in.

In the epic fantasy World of Lasniniar series by award-winning author Jacquelyn Smith, this stand-alone story explores an adventure from Iarion’s deep past, before he becomes a hero of legend.

Now, you can read it online for free for one month only:

On the Card: A Kira Brightwell Short Story (Mystery)

On the Card Kira Brightwell coverKira Brightwell needs to pay.

A problem solver for hire and local hero in her own right, Kira never sought any acclaim for her actions. She only wants to track down the man who abducted her three years ago. And maybe celebrate her birthday with some ice cream cake.

But even an unintentional path to prominence comes with collateral damage.

…And some people can never forgive and forget.

A fast-paced, stand-alone story from the Kira Brightwell mystery series by award-winning author, Jacquelyn Smith.

A stand-alone story of friendship, beards, and magic from the World of Lasniniar epic fantasy series by award-winning author, Jacquelyn Smith.

Feoandir fights to maintain control of his ship in the midst of a magical maelstrom. The lives of his fellow elf passengers and crew depend on him—a mishmash of the various tribes flung together under dire circumstances.

Striking and opinionated, Silvariel suffers no fools. She knows someone must take charge to keep the elves united. Someone willing to listen to her advice and ready to take the blame if things go from bad to worse. Feoandir seems like the perfect choice.

New Websites! (The quest for world domination continues…)

So you may have noticed some changes to this site recently… I’ve set up two new genre-specific sites: one for fantasy, and one for mystery/crime fiction. Most of the links and pages on this site now redirect to one of these new locations. I will continue to post the Free Fiction Feature on this site each month (since the stories are a mix of my fantasy and crime fiction titles), and I’ll post about any other cool updates or promotions I get going. (I expect these posts to be mostly cross-genre as well.) Other than that, I’m not sure how much I’ll be blogging–either here, or on my new sites–since I want to concentrate most of my time on actual fiction writing.

In addition to genre-specific websites, I’ve also broken out my Facebook pages by genre, if you’d like to give me a follow:

Fantasy Facebook Page | Mystery/Crime Fiction Facebook Page

Hello from Canada!

One of the cool things about building my new sites was incorporating a list of as many of the retailers and digital libraries I could find from around the world that carry my books. I’ve included this list on the About page for each of my sites with a link to each retailer. I know the tendency is to only pay attention to the largest companies, but there are SO MANY other players out there–especially outside North America–each with their own niche market of readers. Welcome to the Dharakmeni Empire! (Writing Roundup, July 2020)

Important tomes in any adventurer’s library.

A few months ago, I had an idea. I wanted to create a freebie I could give away as a gift for subscribing to my newsletter group. But I also wanted it to include things that would appeal to both new and regular readers of my work, AND I wanted something that would provide an introduction to each of the series I write, across both the fantasy and crime fiction genres, to encourage people to dip their toes into each to see what they like.

This ended up morphing into the Back Story Sampler Collection.

The introductions to my World of Lasniniar epic fantasy series and Kira Brightwell crime fiction series were easy–I had introductory short stories that were already a perfect fit. And to provide something for existing readers, I added a bonus epilogue for each (that isn’t available anywhere else), as well as reading guides, and threw in some cool coupon codes for good measure.

But my Fatal Empire Quartet was a bit of a tricky one to figure out. I’ve only published the first volume in the fantasy series so far (Keeper of Secrets), but the others are coming out later this year, so I wanted to include some kind of representation of that world in the sampler (which will continue to grow as I sprawl out into new series).

Keeper of Secrets begins during Raziel’s childhood (the main character), so there really isn’t any room to fit in some kind of introductory short story for him. I could write one about his mother or foster-father (and I still might), but it would be difficult to pull off at this point without creating any spoilers for the forthcoming books in the series. Switching Gears

For the past several months, I’ve been wandering around Lasniniar, having adventures and fighting battles alongside the likes of Iarion, Barlo, Felara, Nofret, Arinwyn, and Paige.

But now that I’ve finished the last Legends of Lasniniar story in this run (to be released in March—more details below), I’m switching gears to solving crimes and kicking ass with Kira.

(Actually, I’ve already written the first two Kira shorts, and I’ve had a great time so far riding shotgun with her, Rob, Trevor, and Nick. I’m alternately excited and intimidated by all the action still to come…)

These shorter adventures continue to be a great way to explore all these characters in ways that complement the series novels, and I’m looking forward to more mystery and mayhem with Kira in the coming months.

So for February and March, we have both a new Legend of Lasniniar and a Kira Brightwell short as Legends of Lasniniar winds down and Kira Brightwell starts up. All of these stories include a healthy dose of action/suspense, mixed with quirky humor.

Now Available:

Legends of Lasniniar: Prevailing Wind | Click here for retailer links

Legends of Lasniniar Prevailing Wind coverArinwyn has learned to control her powers. The People of the Dunes have even accepted her as a Wise One—despite her outsider, elven status.

For centuries, she has kept her heritage and magic a secret from the world beyond the desert. But as Lasniniar descends into darkness, both these elements could play an important role.

…If she dares to face her inner demons.

A fast-paced, fantasy adventure for both new and regular readers of the World of Lasniniar series by Writers’ Journal winning author, Jacquelyn Smith. This short story takes place toward the end of Storm Rider.

Tale of the Tape: A Kira Brightwell Short Novel | Click here for retailer links

Tale of the Tape Kira Brightwell coverKira Brightwell can’t wait for high school to be over.

Years before she becomes a local hero and kick-ass problem solver for hire, the teasing and bullying seems like it’s never going to end.

…Until distraction comes in the form of a stolen car and an outrageous bet from rich jock and chief tormentor, Trevor Wright.

A quirky, short crime story for both new and regular readers of the Kira Brightwell series by Writers’ Journal winning author, Jacquelyn Smith. This adventure takes place before Split Decision.

NEW! Available for Pre-order (Coming March 12th):

Legends of Lasniniar: The Devil You Know | Click here for retailer links

Legends of Lasniniar The Devil You Know coverPaige trusts Claire—for the most part, at least.

Claire has proven herself a valuable ally several times over, and has saved the young dwarf woman’s life besides. Now they work together, ridding the human city of Belierumar of its lingering demon scourge.

But Paige can’t help but wonder…

How far is Claire willing to go to betray her own kind?

A fast-paced, fantasy adventure for both new and regular readers of the World of Lasniniar series by Writers’ Journal winning author, Jacquelyn Smith. This short story takes place after Harbingers.

Click the link above to find this title at your preferred retailer. (More retailers will be added after the release date.)

Ground Work: A Kira Brightwell Short Story | Click here for retailer links

Ground Work Kira Brightwell coverRob has been Kira’s best friend for years, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been keeping secrets from her.

Now one of those secrets threatens to come out as he’s forced to take the lead on an unexpected case. (Which is a real pain in the ass, since holding down the fort and grumbling complaints from behind his laptop screen is really more his style.)

His best hope is that Kira will play along without asking too many questions.

…So, yeah. He’s definitely screwed.

A quirky, crime short story for both new and regular readers of the Kira Brightwell series by Writers’ Journal winning author, Jacquelyn Smith. This adventure takes place between Split Decision and Black and Blue.

Click the link above to find this title at your preferred retailer. (More retailers will be added after the release date.)

After The Devil You Know releases in March, I’ll be switching over to putting out new Lasniniar collections starting in April, at the rate of one collection per month. (Each collection will include: 1 novel + 2 Legends of Lasniniar shorts from the past year, for the novels Kinslayer, Godmaker, Void Walker, and Harbingers).

Just a heads up, if you’re missing one of those novels and are interested in getting it with extra adventures for a promotional price. 😉

Smashwords Halloween Sale!

Even sharkosauruses (sharkosauri?) like to dress up for Halloween…

Just a quick update to let you know about a little promotion I’m running for the month of October…

Several of my ebooks are available for 50% off on Smashwords until October 31st. These are all darker adventures (with the exception of Under Wraps, which is just a pure fun Halloween crime story).

What is Smashwords?

Smashwords is a distributor and retailer of indie ebooks. Their retail platform is available internationally, with payments completed by Paypal. They also make it possible for authors/publishers to create coupons for their books, which is awesome.

What ebook formats are supported?

At the moment, I only have the ePub version of my books available on Smashwords. (Check out this post to find out more about why.) ePub is the most widely-used ebook format, and works for Apple, Kobo, and Nook devices, as well as their associated apps.

Halloween in Lasniniar? Plus, a Kira novel that wasn’t meant to happen…

Halloween in Lasniniar

A few years ago, I took on the challenge to write a Lasniniar Christmas-themed story. You know, just because. The reason I say it was a challenge is because there isn’t any Christmas (or organized religion) in Lasniniar, but hey, what do you know? They celebrate the winter solstice. (Convenient, right?) Anyway, I had so much fun with A Solstice Tale, I ended up writing another two Solstice-themed adventures featuring Iarion and Barlo (which always seem to turn into mystery misadventures for some reason).

This year, I wanted to try something different. I love Christmas (as much as someone who has worked 15+ years in retail is capable of doing so), and there might possibly be more Solstice adventures in the future, but I wanted a new challenge.

So what about Halloween? Continue reading →
