Writing Roundup: June 2020

Story time with my buddy, Doug the Sharkosaurus. (Yes, that’s a rainbow poop emoji sitting closest to the camera.)

OK, seriously. How is June almost over? I feel like this whole year has been a complete blur so far.

Well, this month, I worked on getting the Harbingers Lasniniar Collection ready to go for July. (This is the last bundle/collection remaining in the series until I get some new novels and shorts written, starting next year.) The latest short in the Kira Brightwell series, “Seeing Stars” is also coming out on July 2nd, and is available for pre-order.

As I mentioned in my last roundup post, I took a bit of a break from Kira to focus on a totally different project just for my newsletter group, which will be launching on July 2nd as well. (I’ll go into more detail about this in my New Releases/Promotions post in a couple weeks, once it’s already out to subscribers, but I had a fun time working on it!)

…And I started working on my seventh Kira short in this eight-story run I’m doing, “Ring Girl.” This one comes out in August, but you can pre-order now, if you’re interested. Choose Payhip from the retailer links (the blue heart icon) to buy direct from me and get your copy one week early! Trevor takes more of a leading role on this case, at least to start.

Hey, I’m finally on hoopla!

Behind the Books | Legends of Lasniniar: Possession

Sometimes it feels like somebody’s watching me…

Several years ago, I decided to challenge myself to write and release one new short fiction piece a month for an entire year from my World of Lasniniar epic fantasy series. Up until this point, I had only written two or three shorts in the series that took place between the novels. But now I was back to working a day job at the local bookstore. I figured a bunch of shorts would be more manageable as I got my job/writing balance worked out again, while still giving me a push to get things out.

This ended up being a huge growth period for me. Lasniniar is a large place, and even at the time when I started this project of shorter pieces, the existing books spanned thousands of years of history. I had a TON of potential characters and places/events to explore, without the obligation of making a novel out of it. Continue reading →

Puncher’s Chance: A Kira Brightwell Short Story

Puncher's Chance Kira Brightwell cover

Kira Brightwell and trouble seem to go hand in hand.

Still, after escaping her own abduction over three years ago, becoming MMA trained, and solving two major cases in the past few months, most people would consider her above running down the streets of La Valentia with scrambled egg on her shirt to chase down a complete stranger…

But even a local hero has her off days.

A fast-paced, crime fiction misadventure for both new and regular readers of the Kira Brightwell series by award-winning author, Jacquelyn Smith. (This short story takes place between Black and Blue and Low Blow.)

Free Fiction Feature: Legends of Lasniniar: Possession

Legends of Lasniniar Possession cover

Golvanyar lurks within the Wood Elves’ village, in a time before the moon and sun. He watches from the shadows.

His specialness keeps him apart from the rest of his tribe, aside from his mother. Until he finds Iadrawyn. Golvanyar knows they share a connection from the moment he first spots her from afar. Nothing can shake his conviction.

But not even Golvanyar realizes how far that conviction might take him.

In the richly-imagined World of Lasniniar series, “Possession” focuses on an event from the elves’ sprawling past—an event that forever changes Golvanyar, and starts Iadrawyn on the path to becoming a woman of legend.

Writing Roundup: May 2020

Xena: “Wake me up when this is all over.”

This whole quarantine thing has really blurred my months together… I mean, it’s May, but I feel like I barely remember March or April. AND it’s snowed in the last two weeks. (I know, this is Canada. But the week before, we were wearing shorts!) My sense of time and seasons is all messed up.

The only thing that helps me (sort of) keep track of the passage of time is what projects I’ve completed and what still needs to be done.

In addition to preparing the Void Walker Lasniniar Collection for release in June, I also finished writing two new Kira Brightwell shorts this month (“Puncher’s Chance” and “Seeing Stars”). Just waiting on some copy edit feedback. Even though they’re both from the same series, they turned out to be quite different stories. Continue reading →

Behind the Books: The God’s Eye

I wrote “The God’s Eye” in a notebook during my regular train commute to my corporate job with a book retail company in downtown Toronto. For the most part, I squeezed it in during the ride home, when I had a better chance of getting a seat, instead of standing and trying to keep my balance without bumping into anyone else crowded around me.

Other than some really early (and unpublished) work, “The God’s Eye” is the only piece I ever wrote by hand before transcribing it. Everything else I’ve done has been typed directly into some kind of device.

I didn’t do this out of any kind of romantic notion. It was just easier to slip a small notebook into my bag, instead of lugging around a laptop. (Even when I did get a seat on the train, I had to stay on my tiptoes to keep my knees from banging against the person sitting across from me.)

“The God’s Eye” came to me as an idea story—something that stood apart from anything else I was working on. For as long as I can remember, my husband (Mark) has told me to write short stories in addition to my novels. Up until around this point, I usually responded by telling him I wasn’t good at writing short stories (despite having won a local contest in my teenage years with a fantasy short). Besides, fantasy lends itself to sweeping, epic books, not measly short stories, right? (lol)

In a partial effort to prove him wrong, I wrote another fantasy short story called “The Unclean” and submitted it to a couple of larger writing contests (which is a whole other story). Anyway, after “The Unclean” placed third in the Writers’ Journal annual fiction contest, Mark seemed to have some ground to stand on.

So I thought maybe I would see whether that win was a fluke. Continue reading →

New plans for the blog, plus May New Releases

Blog Plans

In case you missed it last week, I’ve launched a new Free Fiction Feature, where I’m posting one of my shorts to read for free on this site each month, and only for that month. (These will be a mixture of my fantasy and crime fiction titles, generally starting with the oldest ones in the series and working my way forward in some kind of chronological order. I’ve also worked it out so Christmas titles will release in November/December, Halloween titles will release in September/October, etc.)

I also want to use this opportunity to try to create a weekly structure for my blogs (which is something I’ve always struggled with). I’m hoping to create a balance between current news about my writing/books (including new releases, promos, etc.), and some behind the scenes, evergreen posts.

Here’s what the new planned schedule looks like:

1st Thursday of the Month:

Free Fiction Feature. (Old one comes down, new one goes up. Check out the current one here.)

2nd Thursday of the Month:

New Release News and Promo/Sale News. (This post you’re reading.)

3rd Thursday of the Month:

Behind the Book feature. This will be some kind of background story or anecdote about the current Free Fiction title. (Unlike the Free Fiction Feature, these posts will stay up indefinitely.)

4th Thursday of the Month:

Writing update. This is where I’ll talk a bit about whatever projects I’ve been working on that month.

…And if there’s an extra week that month, well I might just take it off, or maybe post something extra, if I have something interesting up my sleeve. Hope that makes sense!

Current Sales/Promotions

The Author’s Give Back Sale is still on until May 31st. I have several titles opted in for both fantasy and crime fiction, ranging from 30% off to free on both Smashwords, and in my own online store. You can find all the details (including links and coupon codes) here.

On the Card: A Kira Brightwell Short Story

On the Card Kira Brightwell cover

Kira Brightwell never expects much on her birthday.

But this year promises an even more low-key day than usual, with a sick boyfriend, one of her few friends working a double shift, and her family too busy to celebrate until the weekend.

Curling up with an ice cream cake to binge-watch some movies seems like the best way to salvage things. (And so what if she had to buy the cake herself?)

…Until an anonymous birthday card containing an immediate threat ends up crashing the party.

A quirky, crime fiction short story for both new and regular readers of the Kira Brightwell series by award-winning author, Jacquelyn Smith. (This adventure takes place between Split Decision and Black and Blue.)

Introducing the Free Fiction Feature: The God’s Eye

So what is the Free Fiction Feature?

Basically, I’ll be posting one of my short stories (fantasy or crime fiction) on this website for free each month and ONLY for that month. (The intended schedule will have a new story going up on the first Thursday of every month when the previous story comes down.)

This is an idea I’ve been toying with for awhile now… I was planning on launching it at the beginning of next year, but with everything that’s going on in the world these days, I decided to pull the trigger now instead. (I know lots of people are stuck at home, and money is tight.)

I actually got this idea from Kristine Kathryn Rusch, who’s been posting a free short story every week on her website for years now. (She has A LOT more short stories than I do, lol.) So I’ll be working my way through posting all my existing shorts (many which are north of 10,000 words, along with a few novellas), and newer stories as time rolls on, until I either run out of content, or decide to drop the project.

In addition, I’m planning to run a regular ‘Behind the Books’ post that includes some additional background or fun insights about each story. These will appear two weeks after the free story is posted. (And they’ll stay up indefinitely, like regular posts.)

So with all those details out of the way, on to the first story…

The God's Eye fantasy short story cover

Raena watches the entrance of the Six Crows, waiting for her quarry to arrive.

Tales of her exploits already travel across the land in soft whispers—the finest thief in Midnight Reach.

But no one in the rogues’ tavern recognizes her in her current guise. Not even the hired men who hunt her.

…And Raena needs to tie up some loose ends.

A magic-filled, short story adventure for fans of fast-paced fantasy, “The God’s Eye” by Jacquelyn Smith won first place in the Writers’ Journal Fiction Contest (2011).

Now, you can read it for free on this site for one month only. This short story also comes in ebook and paperback formatboth on its own, and as part of the Rubicon short story collection.

You can find “The God’s Eye” at your preferred online retailer here, or buy it direct from the author. You can find retailer links to Rubicon here, or buy it direct from the author.
